March-Diabetes

March 25th is American Diabetes Alert Day

According to the American Diabetes Association, there are 20.8 million children and adults in the United States, or 7% of the population, who have diabetes, a disease in which the person’s body does not produce or correctly use insulin. Insulin is a hormone that helps change glucose (sugar) and other foods into energy.  Learn more below about diabetes, new medicines in development to treat it, and review charts and graphs related to diabetes research trends.

Recognizing the impact that diabetes has on such a large portion of the population, Innovation.org highlights important and innovative research into new treatments for diabetes. This new research will not only reduce the burden on those living with diabetes, but it can also reduce healthcare costs. Click on the links below to read more about the economic impact of innovative diabetes research.

The Value of Medicines

New diabetes medicines are helping patients avoid serious complications and death, and they can reduce overall healthcare spending. Read more

Controlling Healthcare Costs

One study found new medicines that control diabetes can help prevent serious complications, reducing the cost of care by about $747 per patient every year. Read more

New Medicines in Development
Biopharmaceutical companies have made many advances in successfully treating conditions affecting millions of Americans such as cancer, diabetes, and AIDS. Read below for information about recent advances in diabetes research and treatment.

Research trends for specific patient populations
Diabetes affects about 9.7 million American women over the age of 20, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Click here to read more about women and diabetes.

Diabetes also affects about 176,000 Americans under the age of 20, and about 2 million adolescents between the ages of 12 and 19 have pre-diabetes, according to the American Diabetes Association. Click here to read more about children and diabetes.

The Biomarkers Consortium
In October 2006, The Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (FNIH), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) announced the launch of a major public-private biomedical research partnership, The Biomarkers Consortium, to search for and validate new biological markers─biomarkers─to accelerate dramatically the delivery of successful new technologies and medicines for prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment of disease.
