North Carolina’s Research Triangle Park is a Powerhouse for Biopharma Innovation and Economic Growth

Decades of investment in North Carolina’s biopharmaceutical industry has spurred the state’s economy, workforce development and community engagement.

North Carolina is home to the Research Triangle Park (RTP), the largest research park in America and a growing hub for world-leading research and advanced drug manufacturing.

Created in the 1950s, the RTP was designed to jumpstart economic growth in the state. Today, the RTP consists of hundreds of life sciences companies employing tens of thousands of hard-working North Carolinians. Our industry continues to invest in the region, creating jobs, supporting economic growth and partnering with the community — all while developing next-generation treatments and cures right here in America.

“Today, we’re seeing unprecedented investment in job creation,” said Bill Bullock, Senior Vice President for Economic and Statewide Development, North Carolina Biotechnology Center.

The region has fostered a collaborative spirit between life sciences, academia and government, extending the impact of our industry far beyond those who work in biopharma. Companies are partnering with high schools and community colleges to create opportunities at all levels.

The life sciences industry is also delivering significant economic impact in the state — over $80 billion annually — with a target of $100 billion in annual economic impact by 2030.

The Research Triangle Park is a powerful example of how investing in biopharmaceutical research and manufacturing uplifts entire communities by creating good jobs, strengthening the scientific workforce and fueling an innovation ecosystem that benefits patients, families, and the economy.
